Kiruhura – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially inaugurated the BENNI Foods factory at Kaguta Road in Kiruhura District, underscoring the transformative impact the facility will have on the region’s agricultural sector and economy.

The factory, which specialises in processing dairy products, is set to address the challenges posed by excess milk production in the area while providing much-needed employment opportunities for the local community.

In his address at the launch, President Museveni expressed his gratitude to the investors for choosing Uganda as the location for the factory, noting the country’s immense potential.

“You are most welcome; you are in the right place at the right time. Uganda has vast potential, and once farmers are properly educated on best practices for cow care, we can produce more milk than we do now,” he said.

The President also commended the people of Ankole for embracing his advice to settle in one place and adopt modern dairy farming methods.

“When we came here, we spoke to the elders, and I’m pleased that they took our advice to settle in one place. The introduction of dairy farming was well-received,” President Museveni remarked.

Addressing the ongoing challenges faced by local farmers, the President emphasised the importance of prioritising the health and well-being of livestock. He pointed out the issue of inadequate pasture and urged farmers to plant more grass for their cows.

“Cows should use their tongues to harvest grass, but now they are using their teeth because the grass is short,” he noted, warning farmers against complacency and stressing the need for proactive care rather than relying solely on divine intervention.

Additionally, President Museveni assured the community that the government would address the issue of electricity shortages by providing a dedicated power line to support the factory. He also promised to explore other solutions to mitigate energy-related challenges in the region.

The President highlighted the importance of farmers collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture to access improved cattle breeds that can produce up to 30 litres of milk per day, compared to the current average of 5 litres.

“We have solutions for all problems related to cattle,” he assured, referring to ongoing research into a tick vaccine that would protect cows from harm when ticks bite them.

Her Excellency Jessica Alupo, Uganda’s Vice President, expressed her gratitude for President Museveni’s visionary leadership, emphasising the importance of peace and security in creating a favourable environment for investment.

She commended the President’s commitment to launching major projects aimed at transforming Uganda’s economy.

Mr. Jitendra, CEO of BENNI Foods, shared the company’s dedication to increasing local milk production. “The factory aims to help local farmers produce more milk than the 100 litres we consume daily,” he said.

The factory currently employs 73 local youths, with plans to expand job opportunities as the company progresses beyond its initial test phase.

The launch of BENNI Foods represents a significant milestone in Uganda’s pursuit of industrialisation and sustainable agricultural development. The factory is expected to play a crucial role in improving the livelihoods of local farmers, creating jobs, and contributing to the growth of Uganda’s dairy industry.
