Museveni Hails Raila Odinga as Patriot & Freedom Fighter, Urges Youth to Carry Pan-African Torch

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has joined leaders across the continent in eulogising Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, hailing him as a patriot, freedom fighter, and dedicated Pan-Africanist whose legacy will leave a lasting impact on Africa’s journey toward unity and self-determination.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Museveni expressed deep sorrow over the news of Odinga’s passing, describing it as a profound loss not only to Kenya but to all of Africa.

“Rt. Hon. Odinga was more than just a career politician. He was a freedom fighter in the tradition of his late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice-President,” said Museveni.

He reflected on the shared ideological convictions between father and son, both of whom championed patriotism, social justice, and the Pan-African cause. Museveni noted that he had personally exchanged views with them on Africa’s future.

“Ideologically, they were firmly rooted in a patriotic and Pan-Africanist orientation. They were committed to the unity of Kenya, East Africa, and the wider continent, and were always supportive of our dream of achieving the East African Federation,” he said.

President Museveni emphasised that Odinga’s death comes at a time when Africa urgently needs leaders of vision and conviction to drive the agenda of regional integration and independence forward.

“It is unfortunate that he has departed at such a critical moment. The onus now lies on the youth to rise up and carry forward the torch of these historical fighters for Africa’s future,” he added.

He extended heartfelt condolences to President William Ruto, the people and government of Kenya, and the Odinga family. “May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Museveni concluded.

Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, was a towering figure in African politics and a tireless advocate for democracy, reform, and regional cooperation. He passed away on Wednesday in Kochi, India, where he was reportedly receiving medical treatment.
