President Museveni has congratulated Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for winning a historic runoff election that extended two decades of his rule until 2028.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of Uganda, and on my own behalf, I warmly congratulate President Erdogan on his re-election as the President of the Republic of Türkiye in the polls of 28th May 2023,” Museveni said in a congratulatory message on Tuesday.
According to him, Erdogan’s re-election is a sign of confidence and trust by the Turkish voters in his capabilities.
“Therefore, in keeping with the historical ties between Uganda and Türkiye, I reaffirm our steadfast support for the bilateral relations between the two countries,” Museveni added.
In his Monday speech, Erdogan called for unity and solidary after overcoming Turkey’s worst economic crisis in a generation and the most powerful opposition alliance to ever face his Islamic-rooted party and led by Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
Leaders across Europe, America and the Arab world also sent their congratulations — as did former US president Donald Trump.
Turkey’s longest-serving leader was tested like never before in what was widely seen as the country’s most consequential election in its 100-year history as a post-Ottoman republic.
