Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has criticized President Yoweri Museveni’s reactionary interventions which he said have demonstrated his failure to prioritize the issue of securing the lives of Ugandans.
Bobi Wine who just returned from the U.S. addressed a news conference in Kampala on Thursday afternoon, in light of the rising cases of murder and kidnappings in Uganda and the proposals raised by President Museveni.
On Wednesday, the President suggested that “in order to eliminate these criminals, we may have to look at two other measures” such as capturing all citizens’ palm-prints and DNA.
The proposal follows the gruesome murder of Susan Magara, a former accountant who was kidnapped and later killed by yet to be identified people. It however emerged that during the negotiations between the kidnappers and Susan’s family, the former used unregistered simcards which has since provoked criticism towards government for laxity.
“No more mobile or fixed phone SIM cards should be given to anybody without the electronic identity card,” Museveni said in a statement.
He said that capturing of palm print and DNA details for every Ugandan would eliminate cases where people use unauthentic electronic ID cards.
But Bobi Wine says that the President’s reaction to the security crisis in the country is indicative of the reality that Museveni is not in charge.
“The President’s response is not what one would expect from a President who is in charge; it was evident that our president is not in charge and indeed our security organs are not in control of the situation,” the legislator told the press.
He further bashed the President for continuously making insignificant gestures through social media posts to mourn Ugandans that are innocently killed.
“In my opinion, Ugandans must save themselves; they are not being led but ruled by a government whose priorities are to consolidate the grip on power by the President instead of solving problems of the citizens.”
He has asked President Museveni to step down as his solutions have not yielded results to safeguard the lives of Ugandans. Bobi Wine alluded to the spate of mysterious killings that claimed over 25 women in parts of Entebbe and Nansana last year and the brutal murder of Senior Police officer, Andrew Felix Kaweesi with no action taken by the President.
“In my opinion, the solution would be for the President to relieve himself of the duties of his office because it has become more of a norm in the country to give orders that don’t work.”
“When Gen James Kazini was killed allegedly by a sex worker, an order was given to have all sex workers registered, when Afande Kaweesi was shot dead, the President still ordered for the installation of cameras in all places even where there is no electricity. When Radio was killed, another order was issued to have all bouncers trained, such orders are always given but they solve nothing,” Bobi Wine said.
He was equally disappointed that Police has placed a Shs 100 million bounty in search for the killers of Susan Magara yet this was not done when Uganda lost dozens of women.
