The International Crimes Division Court has set free Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya on bail.

Ssegirinya was granted bail after substituting Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake Butebi with Ntenjeru North’s legislator, Hon Nsanja Patrick as surety.

“Our legal team has been working out to see how the matter can be resolved and today, Hon. Nsanja Patrick has substituted Comrade Zaake in standing as Surety for Hon. Ssegirinya,” The National Unity Platform said.

Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende also MP Ssegirinya’s Lawyer said “Finally Justice has prevailed.”

MPs Ssegirinya and his Makindye West counter part, Allan Ssewanyana were jointly arrested on September 8, 2021, and taken to Masaka Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder, attempted murder arising from the recent spate of killings of people using machetes in Greater Masaka sub-region which left over 25 people dead.

They were remanded to Kigo Government Prison.

Both Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana were granted a UGX 20 million bail on Thursday last week.

However, Ssegirinya couldn’t be released from Kigo prison since one of his sureties, Zaake had left the country before appending his signature on the release form.

Prosecution alleges that MPs Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana physically participated and connived with other people to execute murders in Greater Masaka.

The two legislators have denied the charges.

By press time, Ssegirinya’s legal team were traveling to Kigo prison to pick him.
