Kampala, 16th October 2023 – In a night of celebration and recognition, Andrew Bugembe, Chief Financial Officer of MTN Uganda, emerged as the standout winner of the prestigious CFO of the Year award after scooping the  Compliance & Governance and Strategy Execution Awards and at the 7th edition of the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and Deloitte Chief Financial Officer Awards.

The glittering event, held recently, brought together industry leaders, finance professionals, and distinguished guests to honour excellence and innovation in the field of finance.

About Andrew Bugembe

Andrew Bugembe occupies the position of Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director at MTN Uganda Ltd. He is also on the board of MTN Mobile Money (U) Ltd.

In the past, he occupied the position of Chief Financial Officer of MTN Congo SA and Chief Financial Officer of Lonestar Communications Corp.

Mr Bugembe received a graduate degree from the University of Wollongong and an undergraduate degree from Janardan Rai Nagar Rajasthan Vidyapeeth University.

The awards ceremony, held under the theme “The Future Proof CFO: The Emergence of the Chief Value Officer,” underscored the evolving role of financial leaders in today’s dynamic business environment. 

Charlotte Kukunda, the ACCA Uganda Country Manager, echoed the importance of initiatives such as the CFO Awards in creating impact and inspiring others, “especially the next generation of leaders. Through these awards, ACCA and Deloitte set out to recognize and award outstanding performers and to put a spotlight on this role that over the years has been looked at as evolving and is now changing from CFO to CVO.”

Joseph Owolabi, the ACCA Global President, lauded all the winners of the Chief Financial Officer awards in the various categories for their continued resilience, and contributions to their companies and highlighted the need for agility and innovation in a rapidly changing global landscape, emphasizing the pivotal role that finance leaders play in navigating these shifts.

  • CFO of the Year Award: Andrew Bugembe, CFO of MTN Uganda
  • 1st Runners-Up CFO of the Year Award: Peter Ssenyange, CFO Post Bank (U) Ltd
  • Public Sector Award: Lilian Audo, Chief Finance and Accounts Officer, NMS
  • Not-for-Profit Award: Martha Ddambya, Financial Manager, Save The Children International
  • SME Award: Jackson Ssetuba, Finance Operations Lead, WAZI
  • Young CFO Award: John Ggolooba, Chief Financial Officer, UAP Old Mutual Uganda
  • Compliance & Governance Award: Andrew Bugembe, CFO MTN Uganda
  • Strategy Execution Award: Andrew Bugembe, CFO MTN Uganda
  • Finance Transformation and Technology Award: Fiona Nuwamanya, FCCA, Director of Finance and Administration, Rocket Health
  • Sustainability Award: Kelvin Musana, Chief Financial Officer, Standard Chartered Bank Uganda Ltd
  • Leadership Award: Peter Ssenyange, CFO Post Bank (U) Ltd

The event, launched by ACCA Uganda and globally adopted in 2017, aims to elevate the profile of CFOs and highlight their critical contributions to the success of organizations. This year’s edition was sponsored by the Bank of Uganda, Stanbic Bank, and NBS TV.
