This new platform represents a significant step forward in Uganda’s digital economy, offering both customers and merchants a streamlined and secure way to engage in e-commerce.

Market by MoMo currently offers a range of products under several categories including groceries, electronics/appliances, devices and computers, toys and games, health and beauty, among others.

These products are being supplied by over 3,500 local businesses, boosting trade and employment opportunities for several Ugandans.

Thousands of orders have been delivered through Market by MoMo to date and this e-commerce proposition has shown great potential to deliver a convenient and affordable alternative for the Ugandan market.

Customers can access Market by MoMo through the MTN MoMo app and online at market.momo.africa.

Speaking at the official launch held at Mestil Hotel in Kampala, Brian Mutungi, ecommerce Country Lead of MTN Group Fincommerce, emphasized the transformative potential of Market by MoMo.

“We are thrilled to officially launch Market by MoMo, a platform that connects Ugandan traders with a wide customer base and brings convenience to consumers. Market by MoMo combines a variety of product categories, flexible payment options, and user-friendly shopping features, making it a game-changer for Uganda’s e-commerce sector. This launch also aligns with our vision of leading digital solutions for Uganda’s progress,” said Mutungi, noting that MTN Group’s partnership with Mastercard has also been instrumental in bringing Market by MoMo to life.

Mutungi further highlighted how Market by MoMo will enable Ugandan traders to expand their reach and grow their businesses by exposing their products to millions of potential customers.

Consumers, on the other hand, will enjoy a variety of products with a seamless and convenient shopping experience that includes easy access and transparent pricing among other multiple perks.

Market by MoMo provides a robust, user-friendly shopping experience with seamless access via the MoMo app and website.

Customers from any telecom provider can sign up and conveniently start shopping. The platform offers flexible payment options including MTN MoMo and major credit/debit cards.

Market by MoMo is zero-rated for MTN customers, allowing access without data charges. Delivery is swift and reliable, with orders reaching customers in Kampala and Greater Kampala within two days or less.

Speaking on behalf of Sylvia Mulinge the MTN Uganda CEO, Joseph Bogera the MTN Uganda GM Sales and distribution described the launch of Market by MoMo as a step toward building a more equitable, connected, and empowered society.

“As MTN, we are inspired by our vision that everyone, regardless of their background, deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life. It’s a vision that drives us every day to push boundaries and innovate so that we can create a brighter and more inclusive digital future.” “This milestone reflects the steady and purposeful progress we’ve made, and it highlights the power of collaboration. Together, we’ve woven partnerships that are driving innovation, building capacity, and delivering real, tangible benefits to people across Uganda,” Bogera said.

Sarah Bateta Okwi, the MTN MoMo Chief Finance Office, speaking on behalf of Richard Yego, Chief Executive MTN MoMo further highlighted how the partnership Market by MoMo will enhance the MoMo consumer value preposition for MoMo, beyond person-to-person transfers, payments, savings & loans. Beyond the convenience that Market by MoMo is bringing to Ugandan shoppers, this proposition is expanding the market and opening new opportunities for traders and sellers, complimenting physical foot traffic with online sales.

Amnah Ajmal, Executive Vice President, Market Development, EEMEA at Mastercard, said: “Consumers across the board are now presented with increased choices and it is important for companies to ensure their experiences are safe, secure and seamless. Through this collaboration with MTN Group Fintech, we are proud to enable local businesses and consumers in Uganda to participate fully in better shopping experiences.  Market by MoMo is a significant step forward in creating economic opportunities and digital inclusion, aligning with Mastercard’s vision for a more inclusive, digital Africa.”

Customers benefit from hot deals on the landing page, a wide product variety, and high-quality items across over 100 categories, from electronics to groceries. Frequent promotions such as flash sales, themed campaigns and category-specific discounts further enhance the shopping experience, making high-quality products affordable. Market by MoMo will also enable a previously untapped opportunity for Ugandans in the diaspora, to shop for relatives back home using payment options including MoMo or (debit/credit) card.

Market by MoMo also supports Ugandan merchants, offering no account management fees and a favorable commission structure. Merchants benefit from free pick up, free packaging, content support, 24-hour order settlements, and exposure to MTN’s extensive customer base through integrated marketing support.

A dedicated merchant hub enables merchants to manage stores and track performance, with a dedicated 24/7 support team to address their needs.

The platform’s official launch kicks off with a series of unbeatable offers and discounts starting with the upcoming Black Friday offers and the festive season offers in December. Customers will enjoy discounts of up to 60% on select product categories.

“The e-commerce sector is a rapidly growing segment of the global economy,” noted Mutungi. “By launching Market by MoMo in Uganda, we are not only diversifying our product offerings but also empowering Ugandans to join the digital transformation journey, contributing to our nation’s economic growth. Together, we are setting the foundation for a more connected, more digital, and more inclusive Uganda,” concluded Mutungi.”

The launch of Market by MoMo underscores MTN Group Fintech’s commitment to driving digital innovation, fostering entrepreneurship, and creating a trusted, secure, and customer-focused experience for Ugandans across the country. As Uganda’s e-commerce landscape evolves, Market by MoMo is poised to bridge traders and consumers in Uganda’s expanding digital economy.
