A week after the death of former Monitor Publications Senior Accountant, Abel Katende, security operatives have discovered that he was allegedly killed by by his wife and children.
Katende had gone missing for a week until his body was exhumed by Police from a pit latrine where it had been dumped by his killers.
New findings in the investigation indicate that Katende’s wife, Janet Namugenyi Katende and his two children confessed to having plotted and executed his brutal murder.
“The wife and children to murdered former Monitor Publications Senior accountant Mr. Abel Katende have confessed to his murder,” a statement by Kampala Metropolitan Police said on Sunday.
The three have been arrested to further aid the investigations.
Police Flying Squad operatives found Katende’s body in a pit latrine at his home in Kasangati where the suspects allegedly dumped him after his death.
It is reported that prior to his death, the family had a misunderstanding which culminated in Katende being chased away from his home by the wife and children. Faced with this tragedy, Katende is said to have relocated to his ancestral home in Masulita two years back.
But the Police statement said that “hunger for more riches” forced the family members to later hack a plan on how to end his life “so that they could own all his properties”.
“In a properly hatched plan the deceased received a call from his children Lilian Najuma and Gideon Kaya (all suspects) he had fathered with his wife, saying they needed to visit and bond with him after a very long time to which he agreed”.
“On the fateful day of 27th April 2018, they visited his home, clobbered him with a wielding stick, killing him instantly,” the statement read.
His body was then carried in a car boot and taken to Rutete village, Kasangati in Wakiso where they dumped it in a pit latrine.
But neighbours later tipped off Police on the involvement of the deceased’s children prompting their arrest. According to the account by the neighbours, they had heard Katende screaming for help as he was being beaten to .
Jointly, the Police Flying Squad, Crime Investigation Department, Fire Brigade and rescue services and the area Police managed to exhume the body of the deceased from the pit latrine.
The Flying Squad Commander ACP. Herbert Muhangi has warned the residents who intended to storm and demolish the houses of the suspects that they would also be charged with malicious damage.
