The chairman of the ruling National Resistance Movement (Nrm), Electoral Commission, Dr Tanga Odoi has revealed that cabinet ministers who have intentions to stand for the position of speaker, do not have to resign their positions in order to express their interests.
Odoi, says the ministers can freely express interest at the moment and will be required to resign after the resolutions by the party top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC).
The position of the Speaker fell vacant after Speaker Jacob Oulanyah passed on in Seattle, USA over the weekend.
So far, two people have formally expressed interest in the position of Speaker.
These include, Deputy Speaker Anita Among and Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi Karugaba.
According to the constitution, Members of Cabinet can only be voted to a position of the speaker in parliament upon resignation from office.
