The Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) Returning Officer for Bukedea District, Mugyenyi Joel Mugerwa, has declared Akol Mary who has obtained the largest number of votes, as the winner of the Bukedea District Chairperson by-election.
According to a declaration form signed by Mugenyi, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate is the winner of the Wednesday 14th June 2023 LC V Bukedea polls.
Akol gathered 79,692 votes beating her rivals Lokwiski Tychicus Ebukalin, an independent candidate who garnered 4,941 votes and Sam Oita Odeke of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) who got 2,343 votes.
Odeke had decided to withdraw from the race a few hours before the opening of the voting exercise, citing fraud.
However, the NRM electoral chairperson, Dr Tanga Odoi, told journalists that the voting exercise was free and fair.
