Democratic Party President – General, Norbert Mao, has been vetted as the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs designated by the appointments Committee of Parliament chaired by Speaker Anitah Among.
Mao says that upon approval, he will focus on ensuring a peaceful Presidential transition of power and agreeable constitutional amendments.
Mao has, however, vowed to continue serving as the DP President General in spite of some voices asking him to resign.
On Thursday, a section of DP MPs distanced themselves from the cooperation agreement with NRM and demanded the immediate resignation of Mao.
However, Mao said that the Constitution of DP and the cooperation agreement are not mutually exclusive.
He noted that he signed the agreement as the president of the Democratic Party, and he will continue to discharge his duties as the party president.
Mao said that the demand for his stepping aside shouldn’t be hinged on the cooperation agreement.
“The reason would have been for instance, if members say you will be too busy, I think that what I would listen to because it would be reasonable, but the venomous outbursts that I heard, definitely show that many of our members have not yet internalized the implications of this cooperation,” he said.
Many of the DP Members demanding for Mao’s stepping aside contested for election as members of another political party, The National Unity Platform, (NUP).
