KAMPALA — Makerere University has officially dissolved the 91st Students’ Guild Cabinet and the Guild Representative Council (GRC), marking the start of a leadership transition at Uganda’s oldest public university.
The decision, communicated in a formal notice dated March 6, 2026, was made in accordance with Article 11 (f) and (g) of the Makerere University Students’ Guild Statute 2022. The dissolution took effect on March 5, following the conclusion of the current leadership’s term of office.
The Dean of Students, Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, confirmed that while most guild organs are dissolved, the Guild Tribunal will remain operational to handle student grievances during the transition period.
“The Guild Tribunal will continue to operate as usual and will provide a platform for students to raise concerns and grievances in a fair and impartial manner until the second sitting of the next Guild Representative Council,” Dr. Kabumbuli stated.
The university management expressed gratitude to the outgoing student leaders for their service and dedication over the past year.
During this interim period, the management of Student Guild affairs will be overseen by the Electoral Commission in coordination with University Management through the Department of the Dean of Students. This arrangement is expected to hold until a new student government is elected and sworn in.
