Makerere University has officially commissioned construction works for the expansion of the Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) at Mulago National Referral Hospital, marking a major milestone in the university’s drive to promote research-led healthcare and innovation.

The project, which was officially handed over to CK Associates Limited—the firm contracted to undertake the works—will see the MLI gain a new, state-of-the-art home dedicated to lung health research, training, and treatment.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe commended the Lung Institute for its groundbreaking work and contribution to Uganda’s public health system.

“I have commissioned the works for the construction of the Makerere Lung Institute Expansion Project at Mulago,” Prof. Nawangwe said. “The MLI is doing a commendable job in research and treatment of lung diseases, responding well to the University’s research-led agenda. Congratulations, Prof. Kirenga and the entire team!”

The site handover event also marked the launch of the #MLIat10 celebrations, commemorating 10 years since the institute’s founding.

The ceremony was attended by senior Makerere University officials, the MLI leadership led by Board Chair Prof. Charles Ibingira, and the management of Mulago National Referral Hospital, who generously provided the land for the expansion.

Mulago’s Executive Director, Dr Rosemary Byanyima, praised the collaboration, emphasising that the hospital’s partnership with Makerere University continues to strengthen Uganda’s capacity for clinical research and patient care.

The Director of the Lung Institute, Prof. Bruce Kirenga, expressed gratitude to Makerere University’s leadership for fostering an environment that enables specialised research centres like the MLI to flourish.

According to Makerere University, the new facility will strengthen the institution’s position as a hub for research excellence and healthcare innovation, aligning with Uganda’s broader goals of improving the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases.

“This partnership strengthens the vision for a healthier nation where research, care, and innovation thrive together,” Prof. Nawangwe added.

The expansion of the Makerere University Lung Institute is expected to accelerate progress toward improved respiratory health outcomes and contribute significantly to regional and global health research.
