Makerere University administrators have insisted on holding examinations for final year students this morning despite the presidential directive suspending school activities.

During a broadcast address on Sunday evening, the president directed the closure of all educational institutions for 42-days effective today June 7, 2021, and advised that all learners should return to their respective homes immediately, as the government moves to control a surge in COVID-19 infections.

But according to Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, the final year students had already started their final examinations by the time of the presidential declaration and are expected to return home immediately after their last paper. Examinations at Makerere University for final year students have been running since May 24, 2021.

Hawa Namugenyi a final year student told URN that this was inevitable for them to complete the education cycle. However, continuing students who were scheduled to start their papers today will have their examinations rescheduled, although, according to Mwesize Ronald, a student of Journalism and Mass Communication the 42 days’ lockdown is frustrating.

Kizito Ronald, a continuing student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science who had come to sit for an exam explains that he was turned away from accessing lecture rooms at the College of Computing and Information with colleagues.

Meanwhile, the university acting Dean of Students, Winfred Kabambuli ordered wardens to halls of residences to ensure that students vacate the premises by close of today June 7 2021 in observance of the presidential directive.
