Nairobi — Kenyan journalist Larry Madowo has been named the winner of a Human Rights Defender Award, in recognition of his efforts in highlighting and challenging pressing human rights issues.

The announcement was made by the Defenders Coalition, which praised Madowo for demonstrating “outstanding courage” in addressing human rights concerns over the past year, according to posts shared on X and other online platforms.

The award honours individuals or movements that have shown exceptional commitment to defending human rights, often in challenging or high-risk environments.

Madowo, a correspondent for CNN, has built a reputation for reporting on governance, social justice, and civil liberties issues across Africa and beyond. His work has frequently focused on amplifying underreported stories and holding authorities accountable.

While he has not yet issued a detailed public statement on the award, supporters and media colleagues have lauded the recognition as well-deserved, citing his consistent coverage of human rights-related topics.

The recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for the journalist, whose work continues to shape conversations around democracy, accountability, and freedom of expression in the region.

The Defenders Coalition Award is part of broader efforts by civil society groups to spotlight individuals making significant contributions to the protection and promotion of human rights.
