Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaya, has announced that the 2024/2025 Guild elections will not take place this semester due to internal conflicts within the Electoral Commission.
The conflicts led to the dismissal of the Electoral Commission Secretary and one Commissioner, casting a shadow over the election’s credibility.
Three presidential candidates were also disqualified just three days before the general elections, prompting one of them to file a petition in the High Court of Uganda, which is still pending. Additionally, delays in submitting candidate information and petitions challenging the electoral process further complicated the situation.
To address these issues, Katunguka said the university management decided to suspend the elections until further notice.
An Adhoc Committee was established to investigate the electoral process and review the petitions filed by candidates. In the meantime, an interim Caretaker Government has been appointed to ensure the smooth operation of Guild activities.
According to Katunguka, the suspension will also allow students sufficient time to prepare for upcoming exams and create a conducive examination environment. He urged students to remain calm as management works towards finding a solution.
