Kotido, Uganda – The district engineer of Kotido, Paul Logole is in trouble following his attempt to illegally take some of the grounded district vehicles to Kampala.

Three grounded vehicles including one fuel tank were intercepted by police in Kotido on Friday night as they were being taken to Kampala.

Steven Onen Chan, the Kidepo regional police commander said that the grounded cars were intercepted after the public making an alarm demanding to know where the property of Kotido district was being taken at night.

“They called police and two lorries carrying the vehicles were intercepted. The district engineer Logole is right now making his statement at police,” said Onen Chan. The Kidepo regional police commander said investigations into the matter have started.

Joseph Lomongin, the Chief Administrative Officer Kotido told URN that he never authorized any movement of vehicles belonging to Kotido district local government.

“To me as the custodian of all the property of Kotido district local government, what has happened is theft. I have never signed any document releasing anything belonging to Kotido district local government to go out and I want to know who authorized it,” he said.

Lomogin said he will take necessary action using the rules in the local government act to any officer involved in authorizing the movement of the property of Kotido district without his permission as the chief administrative officer,” he said.

John Longole, one of the Anti-corruption monitors in Kotido said the theft of public assets in Kotido has been on going adding that the van that the district acquired eight years back is also missing.

“Officers have been stealing many items of Kotido district local government. I remember the district had a coaster and now it has disappeared,” he said.

Marry Nakut, another concerned resident said officials who will be implicated in the theft of public property should be jailed and removed from work. “These are the kind of people who are frustrating service delivery by government to the people of Kotido, They  are even paid salaries but they are not contented with what they get,” she added.
