Police in Kisoro are detaining four ‘medical personnel’ accused of running illegal private medical facilities.
The four were arrested on Wednesday following an inspection by officials from Allied Health Professionals’ Council headed by the Regional Supervisor Mr Nahanga Samuel to crack down on quack medics.
Inspections were conducted along the stretch of Kisoro, Kyanika to the border town of Bunagana.
According to Police Spokesperson for Kigezi Region, Elly Matte, some of the four suspects were operating without licenses while others lacked the requisite qualifications.
The suspects are Kwizera Matthew, 56, a retired officer who was found operating St Mathew drug shop in Mubuga trading centre, and 43-year-old Uwimana Tarasis, a nurse who runs Community Care drug shop along Chuho street in Kisoro municipality. Tarasis was found operating without license.
Others are Ahimbisibwe Sarah, 27, and Nsabimana Deo, 55, both of whom are accused of lacking the necessary qualifications to run a drug shop.
Each of the four was fined with money ranging between Shs 300,000 to Shs 600,000.
Matte said that they will be released from Kisoro Police station where they are currently detained after paying their respective fines.
“I want to caution our people from using such medical facilities and warn operators from practicing without relevant documents and trained personnel. The long arm of the law will catch up with them,” Matte cautioned.
