Kampala, Uganda – H.E. President William Samoei Ruto of Kenya has arrived in Uganda to attend the African Union Extraordinary Summit on the Post-Malabo Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).

The summit, held at Speke Resort in Munyonyo, Kampala, focuses on adopting the Kampala Declaration, a key initiative aimed at transforming Africa’s agri-food systems and tackling hunger and poverty through agriculture-led development.

President Ruto, who departed Nairobi this morning, was seen off by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and other senior government officials.

A Continental Focus on Agricultural Development

The CAADP Summit brings together African heads of state, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss strategies for advancing agricultural transformation across the continent.

The Kampala Declaration, which is expected to be the summit’s key outcome, emphasises investment in sustainable agricultural practices, improving food security, and fostering economic growth through agriculture.

President Ruto’s visit underscores the strong bilateral relations between Kenya and Uganda. Both nations share a commitment to regional integration and cooperation on agricultural policies that benefit the East African Community.

Key Summit Agenda

The summit will focus on: adopting the Kampala Declaration to strengthen commitments to agricultural development, promoting sustainable farming practices to combat climate change, enhancing partnerships between governments, private sectors, and international organisations and addressing financing gaps to support agricultural innovation and infrastructure.

As the summit unfolds, leaders are expected to reaffirm their dedication to the goals set under the Malabo Declaration of 2014, which aimed to halve poverty through agriculture by 2025. The Kampala Declaration seeks to build on these commitments, ensuring Africa remains on track to meet its development goals.
