The Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura, has suspended four senior police officers over involvement in land evictions in Jinja district.
The suspended officers are; ACP Julius Twinomujuni (Director of Human rights and Legal Affairs), SSP Edgar Nyabongo- RPC Kidepo, SSPApollo Kateeba (RPC Rwenzori) and SSP Felix Mugizi DPC Kumi).
They were cited in the illegal land evictions in 2015 in Jinja alongside fallen former spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
The late former Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Kaweesi was named by the Justice Catherine Bamugemereire commission before which Kayihura appeared on Tuesday with other senior Police officers.
The said building is located on plot 60/62 Aldina Road in Jinja town.
The officers were suspended in a memo from the IGP dated July 25, 2017 pending investigations in the mismanagement of a court regarding Jinja property.
“The following officers are suspended from duty with immediate effect pending findings of the commission of inquiry in land management and the investigation instituted by IGP under the supervision of DIGP regarding the mismanagement of court process involving court process in Jinja,” the memo reads.
According to the information the commission received, officers were bribed by Birus properties allegedly managed by one Simpson Barungi to supervise the demolition of the building owned by the Privatisation Unit.
Kaweesi, the then Police Director of Operations ordered them to enforce a purported court order to have the tenants evicted from the building which was later demolished.
