Uganda Red Cross Society spokesperson, Irene Nakasiita, said one more body was recovered from the mud, increasing the number of the dead to 16.

“From the assessment report, the death statistics show 2 male adults, 4 female adults, 3 male children and 7 female children,” she said on Wednesday evening.

She added: “The majority of the dead are women and children.”

Uganda Red Cross Secretary General, Robert Kwesiga, also gave a brief to the media on the ongoing response to the incident in Kasese district.

While addressing the plenary, Nabbanja said the Government has provided support of Shs5m to each family that has lost a relative to help in the burial arrangements.

The Office of the Prime Minister has activated an Emergency Response unit headed by Brigadier Gen Kinalwa who is already on the ground.

Affected households have been advised to move to Kagere Church of Uganda in Kasese Municipality.
