Jumia, Uganda’s leading e-commerce platform, has partnered with Spiro to introduce a fleet of electric bikes (e-bikes) for deliveries across Kampala, marking a major step in the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy.

The move aims to reduce carbon emissions while promoting sustainable logistics in urban Uganda.

The pilot program will integrate e-bikes into Jumia’s delivery operations, gradually replacing parts of its conventional fuel-powered fleet. With hundreds of daily deliveries across the city, the shift is expected to cut emissions, lower operational costs, and enhance eco-friendly mobility for riders and customers alike.

“At Jumia, we are committed to leveraging technology and innovation to create long-term value for our stakeholders and the communities we serve. This partnership with Spiro is more than just about deliveries – it is about building a cleaner, more sustainable future for Kampala. Almost half of our fleet will now consist of e-bikes,” said Steven Lamony, Managing Director of Jumia Uganda. “By introducing electric bikes into our operations, we are showing that e-commerce can be both convenient and climate-conscious.”

Riders stand to benefit from lower fuel and maintenance costs, boosting their earnings, while customers can expect more affordable delivery fees as these savings are passed along.

“Our e-bikes are designed for performance, efficiency, and reliability, and we are excited to see them power Jumia’s delivery fleet. This partnership shows how technology can transform urban logistics, reduce emissions, and cut operating costs. Kampala is just the beginning — we envision this as the future of mobility across Africa,” said Bruce Mucunguzi, Managing Director of Spiro.

Spiro will also offer preferential rates to Jumia’s logistics partners to encourage wider adoption of environmentally friendly transport solutions. Each e-bike is equipped with a powerful electric motor and a long-lasting battery capable of powering a full day of deliveries after a four-hour charge.
