Police has Monday morning arrested veteran journalist and political talkshow host, Basajja Mivule moments after his show on Baba TV in Ntinda in Kampala.
According to Baba TV, Mivule was arrested by plain clothed security personnel who picked from the station’s offices in Kampala.
The spokesperson of the Police Directorate of Criminal Investigations, ASP Twine Charles confirmed Mivule’s arrest to this news website but couldn’t divulge details.
“Let me get a briefing from the department handling a case like his and get back to you after an hour,” ASP Twine told SoftPower News.
On Sunday evening, Mivule used his Facebook page to claim that he had been summoned to police for questioning over promoting sectarianism.
He said, on phone, he was told to willfully present himself before Brig Sserunjogi Ddamulira, the Director of Police Crime Intelligence or be arrested.
“They told me I was needed for interrogation on my recent remarks which they claim incite violence and promote sectarianism,” he said.
Mivule said he recently pointed out names of a number of senior officials in the military and government whom he said come from one part of the country. This he says, he regrets not, pointing them out ‘because they are facts.’
Mivule’s arrests comes just days after the arrest and subsequent detention of four radio simba presenters over the same offence. These who also belong to the Bizonto comedy group include Ssabakaki Simon Peter alias Akozonto akato, Ssewanja Julius alias Ssabazonto, Mbabali Merceli alias Giant zonto and Gold Kimatono alias Jjaja zonto.
Police said they were arrested following a recording of selected videos that were uploaded and later shared on various social media platforms, unfortunately with the potential of causing hatred and unnecessary apprehension.
They also noted that some of the videos had threats of attack on government, and individuals upon which they timely came in to avert the situation.
