Olympic Medalist and World champion, Joshua Cheptegei, will headline the second edition of the Elgon Half Marathon set for November 2, in Mbale city.
The event is designed to amplify the need for climate action and conservation in the biodiverse Elgon region, broaden inclusive and meaningful community participation within the tourism value chain, and advocate for the elimination of gender-based violence (GBV).
The Elgon Half Marathon with Joshua Cheptegei will incorporate 21km (half marathon), 10km and 5km running events traversing the foothills of the breathtaking Mount Elgon National Park.
Proceeds from the event will go directly to Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation (JOCDEF) to support the foundation’s important work in community transformation.
In his remarks, Cheptegei, emphasized the significance of the Marathon in conserving the environment.
“I want to emphasize that this marathon is more than just a feat of endurance, it is a call to action that we must conserve and protect our environment, preserve our natural heritage, and promote sustainable livelihoods,” said Cheptegei.
Cheptegei also noted that the marathon will help highlight on the danger of gender-based violence.
“Gender-based violence undermines the progress that we strive for. Through this marathon we are promoting inclusivity, empowering women and girls, and fostering a culture of respect. Together we can make a difference,” he said.
In her remarks, the UNDP Resident Representative in Uganda, Nwanne Vwede-Obahor, said, “Joshua Cheptegei is using his talent for his community. It is important to appreciate that as he runs, he runs with so many people. I am so happy that we can accompany him as he carries his community with him.”
