LISBON, Portugal — Uganda’s long-distance star Jacob Kiplimo has etched his name further into athletics history after setting a new men’s half marathon world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon on Sunday.
The 25-year-old produced a dominant performance on the fast Lisbon course, reclaiming the world record and winning the race convincingly. His time shaved 10 seconds off the previous record of 57:30, which had been set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in Valencia in 2024.
Kiplimo’s remarkable run came in a race without pacemakers. He covered the first 5 kilometres in 13:28 and reached the 10km mark in 27:00, running alongside Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir and Gilbert Kiprotich before breaking away later in the race to finish alone.
Kipkorir finished second in 58:08, while fellow Kenyan Kiprotich came third in 58:59.

A return to a record-breaking course
Lisbon has become a special venue for the Ugandan star. In 2021, Kiplimo also set a world record of 57:31 on the same course, which stood until 2024 before being surpassed.
Sunday’s performance marks a triumphant return for the reigning world cross-country champion, who had targeted the Lisbon race as part of his preparations for upcoming international competitions.
Pride for Uganda and global athletics
Kiplimo’s latest achievement further strengthens Uganda’s reputation as a powerhouse in long-distance running, following the successes of athletes such as Olympic champion Joshua Cheptegei.
With the historic 57:20 performance, Kiplimo once again becomes the fastest half marathon runner in history, delivering another proud moment for Uganda and the global athletics community.
