“It all started with a dream and a desire to do something exceptional,” said Uganda’s jazz icon Isaiah Katumwa, as he prepares to mark a significant milestone, 30 years of musical excellence with a grand celebration slated for July 20, 2025, at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
The event, aptly titled “Isaiah Katumwa: 30 Years of Jazz”, is more than a concert. It’s a tribute to a journey that began with a broken saxophone and no teacher — a journey driven by faith, determination, and a passion for purpose.
“This journey was never just about me,”Katumwa told the media at the press launch, “but about lifting others as I rise. That’s what legacy means to me.”
Katumwa, a self-taught saxophonist, has become one of Uganda’s most iconic musical exports.
His sound — a rich blend of African roots, smooth jazz, and spiritual influence — has earned him global recognition and collaborations with legends like Manu Dibango and Hugh Masekela.
Opening up at the press conference, Katumwa reflected on his humble beginnings, recalling how he taught himself to play on a broken saxophone and rose to become a torchbearer for Ugandan jazz.
“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. But more than that, I’m proud to now mentor the next generation — young, passionate jazz talents who will carry this legacy forward,” he said, visibly emotional.
Backing this historic moment is Tusker Malt, which comes on board as the official beer sponsor.
The brand, known for championing musical craft through platforms like Tusker Malt Conversessions, is aligning with Katumwa on a shared philosophy — one rooted in authenticity, consistency, and craft.
“Thirty years of jazz is ultimately three decades of classic, timeless musical memories,” said Denise P. Nazzinda, Premium Beers Manager at UBL.
“Isaiah Katumwa’s story aligns perfectly with what we believe in — taking time to perfect the craft. That’s why Tusker Malt is proud to be part of this celebration of musical craftsmanship at its finest.
Nazzinda also hinted at a future collaboration through the brand’s Conversessions platform, “We would love to one day host Isaiah. His sound and story reflect the very essence of what we celebrate — musical depth and staying true to who you are.”
The upcoming concert will also feature performances from some of Uganda’s finest musicians, including Michael Kitanda, Joseph Sax, Myko Ouma, Shaka Mayanja, and all artists who represent the vibrancy and future of Uganda’s jazz scene.
