After a musical hiatus during which he occasionally released music online, Uganda’s celebrated jazz maestro Isaiah Katumwa has jetted back into the country — ready to set the stage alight at the highly anticipated dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival.
Set for May 10 at the Kampala Serena Hotel, this year’s festival promises an electrifying celebration of rhythm, soul, and musical excellence.
A Star-Studded Line-Up
The 2025 edition will feature an eclectic mix of legendary performers, headlined by world-renowned saxophonist Kirk Whalum, Uganda’s own Isaiah Katumwa, and Tshaka Mayanja with the Black Roots Academy of Soul—a collective of some of the most talented jazz musicians in the country today.
“Jazz is more than music—it’s a movement, a community, and a story,” said Katumwa in an interview.
“I am thrilled to be part of this celebration, and I invite everyone—from die-hard jazz enthusiasts to curious newcomers—to experience a concert that blends culture, creativity, and connection.”

According to event sponsors dfcu Bank, the dfcu Jazz in the Pearl Festival is more than just a musical event; it is a cultural collaboration designed to not only entertain but also promote Uganda’s growing jazz scene.
This initiative builds on dfcu Bank’s 60-year legacy of empowering Ugandans and strengthening communities through shared experiences.
“Music has an extraordinary ability to transcend boundaries and connect people,” said Charles Mudiwa, CEO of dfcu Bank.
“dfcu is proud to bring you the Jazz in the Pearl Festival because we deeply believe in the power of connection. For six decades, our vision has been to build a community of progress, and this concert is a celebration of that journey with the Ugandan people.”
