It was captivating. It was magical.
“The King of the West” Reagan Muhairwe, commonly known as Ray G Rhiganz on Saturday, October 29, 2022, filled up Imperial Royale Hotel to the brim as he pulled off the maiden “Ray G Live in Kampala” concert.
The show attracted thousands of revellers from all walks of life who came to listen to Ray G deliver heritage music in the Runyankore language.
The event kicked off at around 9 pm with the talented duo Cata Vybs and Lau Wyne cheering up the audience and preparing it for the wonderful evening.
The most amazing rapper to come from Western Uganda, Nsenge Yahaya aka Rapper Truth 256, captivated the audience when he delivered a top-notch performance.
Cheers and ululations went on and on with each set of lyrical rhymes that slide off his tongue. The audience loved him indeed.
When the revellers were yet to recover from Penn’s tantalizing rap, Zex BilangiLangi made an entrance that was “out of this world”.
He followed it up with a catchy performance that aroused the audience further.
One of Uganda’s best vocalists, Aziz Azion, followed suit with love ballads that saw “abasheshe” (slang for the ladies from western Uganda) scream for more as they sang along.
The R&B UG artiste made a cameo in the same spirit supporting Ray G.
The show then took a break to allow the revellers to catch their breaths and welcome to the stage Dr. T. Amale (Tamale Mirundi).
“Lumu nagenda e’mbarara naye nga amazi gayika mu myala. Nenebuza bano abatayina yadde lake yadde river, amazi gavawa? Ssebo bayinaa ebikazi bitano byebateka kukasoozi nebigabila tap zona eze’mbarara household water,” he said, sending the hall reverberating with laughter.
“Once I went to Mbarara but the water was leaking into the sewers. I asked myself ‘these people who don’t even have a lake or a river, where does the water come from?’ Sir, they have five ladies that they put on the hill to distribute all the taps of Mbarara household water.”
Comedian MC Mariachi followed up, cracking more jokes about how rare it is to find a Muslim who is a Munyankore.
“I didn’t look like a Muslim Nyakore. You will not find Hajji Natukunda, I do not know Hajji Muhangi. Where would you find one?”
Maulana and Reign performed a hilarious skit about a situation when you are looking for a guest house and you meet a northerner to ask for directions.
It was the “I want to party konka akasente nikakye” song maker, Ambroy, who reignited the dance mood.
T Paul, another gem from western Uganda, also performed to the audience’s expectations. He was appreciated.
Shamim Murerwa known professionally as Omega 256 (sometimes stylized as Queen of the West) also took to the stage and left a lasting memory.
Ray G makes history
When it was his turn, the “King of the West” and Man of the Hour, Ray G, finally stepped on stage.
The reception he received from the fans was beyond amazing.
More so was his performance alongside Levixone.
The moment was simply eye-catching as the two big performers rocked the audience.
He went ahead to deliver a magnetic performance, dropping one song after the other while guitar maestros Myk Ouma and Jose Sax did their thing.
It was his latest hit song “Make a Way (Mpigiza)” and “Omusheshe” featuring Spice Diana that sealed the deal.
Spice, who recently held a memorable show in Thailand, was also present to support Ray G.
Ray G becomes the first artiste from Western Uganda to hold a successful concert in Kampala.
