Opposition party, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has denounced the former Jinja LC IV party leaning contestant, Robert Kanusu who defected to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Tuesday.
Kanusu who had on several times contested for LC IV seat in Jinja on the UPC ticket and failed was paraded before President Museveni and a crowd of people attending a campaign rally for Jinja East constituency NRM candidate, Nathan Igema Nabeeta.
Kanusu then publicly announced that he had “seen the light” hence choosing to cross from his mother party to the ruling NRM.
President Museveni who doubles as the NRM National Chairman then congratulated Kanusu and offered him a yellow cap.
However, the UPC party Spokesperson, Michael Osinde Orach told the media at the party headquarters in Kampala that Kanusu has not been a UPC member for a long while.
“Kanusu crossed to Go-Forward long time ago and thus contested as an Independent and he automatically lost his membership,” Osinde said.
Osinde said that according to the party constitution, if anyone supports, finances, campaigns or stands as an Independent or decampaigns a party candidate, he/she loses his membership to the party.
“Kanusu would have been gentle enough not to deceive President Museveni that he was still a UPC member,” Osinde told the press.
