Gulu City is fast emerging as Northern Uganda’s new cultural and tourism hub, with recent celebrations like the Gulu City Oktoberfest showcasing the region’s unique blend of heritage, hospitality, and global connection.

The week-long event, held at the Kaunda grounds,  The festival drew participants from all regions of Uganda, Germany, among others all these testifying to its dual thrust.

The event brought together local communities, tourism and sports promoters, to a lively showcase of Acholi culture, music, cuisine, and craft.

The Paramount chief, Rwot David Onen Acana II, urged his people to seize it as a “golden opportunity to share our values, hospitality, and rich cultural heritage with the world. He urged the people of Acholi to safeguard their culture, heritage by teaching the young ones.

Uganda-Germany relations also found symbolic resonance in Gulu. Ambassador Danny Ssozi, Deputy Head of Uganda’s mission in Berlin hailed the event as “a bridge between heritage and innovation, between culture and enterprise, and between Uganda and the wider world.”

He noted that the Oktoberfest is a symbol of unity and friendship between the two countries.

Beyond the festivities, the Oktoberfest carried a deeper message, the need to strengthen capacity building within the hospitality and tourism sector. As stakeholders noted, empowering local tourism actors remains crucial to sustaining Northern Uganda’s cultural revival and attracting more visitors to the region.

Dr Gessa Simplicious, Head of Public Relations at the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), reaffirmed the Board’s commitment to this vision.

“The call for capacity building among hoteliers and hospitality practitioners in Gulu is both timely and aligned with our agenda at UTB to strengthen domestic tourism through quality service delivery and regional empowerment,” he said.

“We firmly believe that sustainable tourism begins with empowered local actors.”

According to Dr Gessa, UTB is working closely with the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquitiesand private sector associations to roll out targeted training programs focusing on standards, customer service, digital visibility, and product development.

The initiative aims to ensure that Gulu’s hotels, tour operators, and cultural enterprises meet the expectations of both domestic and international visitors.

Local leaders also echoed these sentiments. They appealed for UTB’s continued support to improve the city’s tourism infrastructure, highlighting opportunities in cultural tourism, eco-tourism, and conference travel.

They cited ongoing investments in road networks and beautification projects as steps toward positioning Gulu as a gateway to Northern Uganda’s natural and cultural attractions.

The Oktoberfest itself symbolized this transformation. The event seamlessly fused Acholi traditional dance, drum performances, and cuisine with global beer brands, among others.

Performers from across the country thrilled audiences with traditional music and storytelling, while artisans displayed locally made crafts that reflected Uganda’s  rich heritage.

Cultural commentators described the festival as a turning point a moment when “the echoes of gunshots” that once defined the region were replaced by the rhythmic beats of traditional drums, signaling a new era of peace, pride, and economic opportunity through tourism.

Gulu’s strategic location near Murchison Falls National Park, Acholi cultural sites, and cross-border routes to South Sudan gives it immense potential as a tourism and business hub.

The growing interest in events such as the Oktoberfest is helping to rebrand Northern Uganda as a must-visit destination for both Ugandans and international travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences.

“Northern Uganda is ready to take its rightful place on Uganda’s tourism map,” Dr. Gessa emphasized. “UTB looks forward to collaborating closely with the local government and private sector to make this vision a reality.”
