Government is finalizing a comprehensive plan to support various Private institutions taking care of the disabled and the elderly.
According to the State Minister in charge of people with Disabilities, Hellen Grace Asamo, it is government’s responsibility to take care of people living with disabilities and the elderly.
“As a ministry, we are finalizing a comprehensive plan to support our homes and institutions taking care of our old people and the PWDs,” she said.
She made the remarks While handing over an assorted donation from Vantage Care Limited to Mapeera Bakateyamba’s home in Nalukolongo.
The minister applauded private partners for their tremendous contribution in supplementing government’s duty of taking care of its citizens.
“We have agreed that we have to look at home care in our programing. I talked to my commissioner and we agreed that we shall be taking care of such homes and this is the first home I am visiting,” Asamo said.
She asked the in-charge of the facility to list some of the basic requirements needed at the facility for some quick interventions.
Rubaga Division Mayor, Mbelaze Zaake, applauded vantage care for having selected a home to support from his area and called upon other key stakeholders to do the same.
Wilfred Ingabire the Country Director for Vantage Care, noted, “We came up with these services to ensure that the neglected members of the society receive the care and treatment they deserve, we decided to support people at Bakateyamba to enable them overcome the challenges.”
Sister Lawrence Nakiwu, the home Administrator, said the donation will help cushion the home on some basics.
Adding, “We still have a challenge of high utility and electricity bills, leaking kitchen which makes it hard for us to prepare meals for our people especially after it has rained.”
The donation included wheel chairs, crutches, walkers, shower chairs, adult diapers among others.
The home houses over 70 people who include those abandoned by their families, elderly and disabled from Uganda , Kenya , Tanzania, Sudan and other neighbouring countries was started in 1976 by the late Cardinal Emmanuel Kiwanuka Nsubuga.
