Uganda has launched the construction of a state-of-the-art 250-bed cardiac hospital.

The hospital under the Uganda Heart Institute is valued at $70 million. The project will help to expand access to advanced cardiovascular care and reduce costly referrals abroad. It will occupy the 10 acres of land offered by the government in Naguru, Kampala.

The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah, represented President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the groundbreaking ceremony. President Museveni emphasized the significance of this milestone in the NRM government’s efforts to deliver quality and modern healthcare services to the people of Uganda.

He urged stakeholders, agencies, contractors, and the Uganda Heart Institute management to ensure value for money and timely delivery of the project within the agreed two-year timeframe.

Dr. James Magala, Chairman of the UHI Board, highlighted the urgent need for a dedicated facility, citing the rising burden of heart disease in Uganda and across the region.

The new hospital will feature 10 floors, cutting-edge medical equipment, and specialized training facilities designed to strengthen Uganda’s healthcare capacity.

The project, awarded to Egypt-based Arab Contractors Osman Ahmed Osman & Co., is also expected to transform Uganda into a regional hub for cardiac care, medical training, and research.

Dr. Magala stressed that the new facility will expand access to quality cardiac care, ensuring life-saving treatment is available and affordable for all Ugandans.

It is also expected to revolutionize Uganda’s healthcare system by providing world-class cardiac care and positioning the country as a leader in cardiovascular treatment in Africa.

Dr. John Omagino, the Executive Director of UHI, announced that funding for the project has been secured through the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), the OPEC Fund, and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD).

The financial package includes $70 million in loans and grants, along with an additional $3 million and 10 acres of land for the hospital’s development.

“These resources ensure the full implementation of this groundbreaking hospital project,” Dr. Omagino stated.

“This project ensures affordable treatment, specialised training, and reduced referrals abroad,” Dr. Omagino emphasised.
