The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has called on African militaries to overcome barriers hindering collaboration, stressing that enhanced military cooperation is vital for regional stability and continental unity.
Speaking to senior officers at the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) Command and Staff College in Musanze District, Gen Kainerugaba identified persistent regional conflicts and underdevelopment as key challenges undermining efforts toward military integration.
“We must think beyond borders and focus on what unites us,” he said. “Mechanisms like regional cooperation, human security, and international partnerships with our traditional allies are essential to our shared future.”

Gen Kainerugaba emphasized the value of collective action, arguing that stronger cooperation among African nations not only helps deter conflict but also channels resources toward economic development by minimizing the need for excessive military expenditure.
“Working together delivers better outcomes. Each country brings unique strengths to the table, and when combined, they create a powerful force for peace and progress,” he noted.
He lauded the diverse representation of African nations among the college’s student officers and urged them to champion African-led solutions to African problems. “Our security, prosperity, and unity depend on us adopting a strategic and cooperative mindset,” he added.

The Ugandan CDF also called for a departure from the culture of rivalry among African states. “Let us abandon the race to outshine each other. Our focus should be on mutual growth, not competition,” he said.
Gen Kainerugaba expressed appreciation for the enduring partnership between the UPDF and RDF, attributing it to the visionary leadership of Presidents Yoweri Museveni and Paul Kagame.
During his visit, Gen Kainerugaba toured the college facilities and was briefed on its operations. He was accompanied by Rwanda’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Mubarakh Muganga, who joined him throughout the engagement.
