The Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala is currently admitted to Medipal International Hospital in Kampala after surviving an attempted assassination on Tuesday morning.
The gunmen reportedly intercepted General Katumba, who was driving in his vehicle registration number H4DF 2138 along Kisaasi-Kisota road and sprayed it with bullets on both sides.
The incident happened a few minutes after 9am and the assassins were reportedly riding on two motorbikes.
He was in the car with three other occupants including his daughter identified as Brenda Wamala Nantongo, his driver, Haruna Kayondo and the body guard who is yet to be identified.
Katumba’s daughter, Nantongo and the driver died on the spot while the General escaped with gunshot wounds reportedly in both his arms.
Videos clips immediately released after the incident show Boda Boda riders in the area sitting the former Chief of Defense Forces on one of the motorcycles to Malcom Clinic, the nearby health facility in the area. At the moment, both his sleeves contained a lot of blood from the bullet wounds.
Meanwhile, bodies of the two deceased individuals remained in the car at the scene of crime by publication of this story.
Katumba was temporarily at Malcom Clinic before being transferred to Medipal International Hospital for better medication.
A number of top government officials including Dr Chris Baryomunsi, the State minister for Housing and Urban Development, Kayunga District Woman MP Aidah Nantaba, CDF Gen David Muhoozi, Deputy IGP Gen Paul Lokech among others would immediately visit the scene of crime, Malcom Clinic and Medipal Hospital.
Security is expected to address the media on the incident later today.
General Katumba is not the first high profile Ugandan official to be attacked by armed gunmen riding on motorcycles.
On March 17th, 2017, unknown gunmen shot dead the former Police Spokesperson, Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his bodyguard, Kenneth Erau and Driver, Godfrey Mambewa.
The trio was gunned down, a few meters from Kaweesi’s home in Kulambiro in Kisaasi, a Kampala suburb.
Kaweesi’s assassination followed the murder of former State Prosecutor, Joan Kagezi in 2015, Major Muhammad Kiggundu in 2016 in a similar style.
In June 2018, unidentified assailants also gunned down Arua Municipality member of parliament, Ibrahim Abiriga in a similar manner.
