Prominent educationalist and politician, Joyce Mpanga, has died.
The former minister passed away Saturday aged 90, according to Buganda Kingdom spokesperson Israel Kazibwe.
Joyce Mpanga was a member of Buganda Lukiiko since 2009.
She served as Minister of Women in Development and Minister of State for Primary Education and Member of Parliament from 1996 to 2001 for Mubende District.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our very own, one of Makerere University’s Matriarchs, Hon. @JoyceRMpanga,” tweeted Makerere University.
“A politician, women rights crusader and educationist in the past six decades, Joyce Mpanga was one of Makerere’s illustrious female alumni.”
She was a woman of many firsts, including being the first female lecturer in the faculty of education at Makerere University and Gayaza High School’s first African deputy headmistress.
