The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has released the May 2024 examination results citing a general improvement in performance.

Of the 81 students who completed the course, 41 (50.6%) are female and 40 (49.4%) are male.

Twelve (12) (57.1%) of the 21 top positions were taken by female candidates and 9 (42.9%) male candidates.

The cumulative number of students who have completed the CPA course has now reached 5,051.

While releasing the results, the Chairperson of the Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB), CPA Prof. Laura A. Orobia, said this year, they organised a series of student engagement activities to improve performance.

“In February and March, we had 2,593 attendees out of 10,195 expected (25.4%). These free sessions showed better exam results for attendees.”

According to her, the students attending engagement activities performed better in exams.

“Engagement boosts performance. PAEB encourages students to join engagement activities. These sessions help students understand requirements and improve performance,” she said.

Results:

According to Dr Orobia, an average pass rate of 54.7% was registered in the Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD) course up from 51.2% in November 2023.

“A total of 150 passes were recorded out of 274 ATD scripts, with female candidates leading at 63.3%.”

She said 52% of ATD exam passes were scored by candidates aged 18-24, with 37.3% by those aged 25-29 while first-time attempts accounted for 54% of the passes.

In the Certified Tax Advisor (CTA) course, the average pass rate jumped from 36.2% in November 2023 to 52.3% in May 2024.

“113 CTA candidates presented 214 scripts, with 52.3% registering passes. 58% of these passes were by first-time attempts. From 36.2% in November 2023 to 52.3% in May 2024, our CTA pass rate shows significant progress,” revealed Dr Orobia.

She also highlighted that the average CPA exam pass rate improved from 38.5% in November 2023 to 43.7% in May 2024.

“6,141 CPA candidates presented 10,678 scripts in May 2024. With 56.1% from female and 43.9% from male candidates, 4,668 scripts registered passes.”

According to her, 65.8% of the passes in May 2024 were by first-time candidates.

“Age bracket 25-29 years forms the bulk of active students, showing strong commitment from fresh graduates,” she said.
