Environment enthusiasts gathered at Kampala Serena Hotel Wednesday for the “Green Economy Summit 2023” to put their visionary minds together and pave the way for a sustainable tomorrow.
The Green Economic Summit 2023 held under the theme “Building a climate action and sustainability-based economy”, dives into building a circular economy for Uganda and transforming challenges into opportunities while also focusing on environmental stewardship.
Edwin Muhumuza, the Chief Executive Officer of Youth Go-Green (YGG), said the Green Economy Summit is a premier gathering that aims to drive forward the transition towards a climate action-driven and sustainability-based economy.

“In the face of global environmental challenges, this summit will bring together key stakeholders, thought leaders, and experts to foster collaboration, share innovative ideas, and formulate actionable strategies,” he noted.
“The Green Economy Summit 2023 resonates deeply with our mission Youth-Go-Green. I’m thrilled to see the dedication of young people towards advocating for sustainable practices. This summit is a testament to the power of collaboration and potential for positive change when we come together.”

He added: “Through our participation, we showcase the innovative solutions young minds are creating to drive a circular economy. Let’s use this platform to amplify our voices, connect with like-minded individuals and inspire others to join us. By harnessing our collective energy, we are not just attending a summit – we are shaping the future we want to see.”
Founded in 2014, YGG is a leading youth-led organization advancing climate action in Uganda and an Umbrella organization of youth that is engaged in climate change, resilience, green growth, environment protection, SDGs, and youth empowerment-related activities in Uganda and other African countries.

Edwin Musiime, the Director General of Green Economy East Africa, said the Green Economy summit creates a platform to advocate for comprehensive climate action, encouraging industries and governments to adopt eco-friendly practices.
According to him, the summit also highlights the significance of integrating sustainability principles across various sectors, including finance, housing, energy, and more, not forgetting emphasizing the role of youth in driving a circular economy through innovative solutions and active participation.

“By embracing the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, we can minimize waste, reduce our carbon footprint, and foster sustainable economic growth in Uganda and the region.”
He added: “My dream is for Uganda to be the pacesetter, the trailblazers when it comes to sustainability.”

Dagmar Zwebe, the Country Representative of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGG1), said the shift towards a green economy can pave the way for a healthier planet and a brighter future where waste is minimized, and resources are reused and recycled.
“I’m encouraged to see such a diverse collaboration of partners coming together to address the urgent need for sustainability. This summit provides a platform to discuss innovative strategies, share best practices and forge partnerships that will drive us towards a greener future,” she said.

She added: “Green economy encompasses mitigation of emissions, and pollution, adaptation, and inclusion, with the goal of involving everyone, regardless of age, gender, or location. Together we can positively impact the environment. Let’s seize this opportunity to accelerate our efforts in transitioning to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy.”
Laura Muwanguzi, a Climate Activist, firmly believes that it’s the responsibility of her generation to shape a more sustainable future.

“This summit serves as a vital platform for us, the youth, to actively engage and contribute to the circular economy. Together, we can drive meaningful change, advocate for climate action, and ensure that sustainability is at the heart of every decision we make,” she pointed out.
She went on: “Let’s harness our passion, innovative ideas, and collective determination to create a world that thrives on green principles.
Boonabaana Phionah, a climate activist, said the circular economy is an economic model that prioritizes reducing waste, reusing materials and recycling resources in a way that minimizes environmental impact.

“It aims to create a closed-loop system where products, materials & resources are used efficiently and sustainably. Youth, as the driving force of tomorrow’s world, play a pivotal role in the transition towards a circular economy,” she stated.
