The Uganda Electoral Commission has officially launched the nomination process for Village Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees, with activities now underway across the country and continuing daily, including weekends and public holidays, until June 10, 2025.
The nominations target three key interest groups: Youth (18–30 years), Older Persons (60 years and above), and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Eligible individuals are encouraged to present themselves at their respective village nomination centres to participate in this crucial democratic exercise.
This marks the beginning of a countrywide electoral roadmap for SIGs that will run through August 2025, covering elections at Village, Parish/Ward, Sub-County, Municipal, and District levels, culminating in the election of the National Youth Council Committee.
In a public statement, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, called on all eligible participants and stakeholders to take note of the outlined timelines and adhere strictly to the electoral guidelines.
“The Commission calls on all stakeholders to take note of the above timelines and to participate in the respective activities following the guidelines for the elections,” said Justice Byabakama.
The elections are expected to strengthen grassroots representation and inclusion of Special Interest Groups in local governance, providing a voice for Uganda’s youth, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
