Ebola: Museveni says Lockdown Efforts Paying Off

President Museveni says Uganda’s efforts in the fight against Ebola Virus Disease have begun to pay off.

In a televised presidential address Tuesday, Museveni said this was evidenced by the events in Mubende district where no Ebola case was reported in the last few days save for yesterday where one Ebola case was confirmed.

He revealed that in the first 21 days of the lockdown, cases dropped to an average of three per day.

“When you cooperate and alert the health system early, your chances of surviving are higher.”

The president, however, said the Ebola disease has been complicated by the boda boda riders who were earlier allowed to transport cargo but have resorted to loading people and helping some escape from the district.

He asked all those in the quarantined districts to go to the nearest health facilities rather than escaping to nearby districts which puts the population at risk.
On Kassanda district, the President said more needs to be done since guidelines have been flouted by the residents.

He gave an example of a family that exhumed a body of an Ebola victim which led to the spread of the disease that has so far killed 10 other persons in the family involved.
