In her speech, Lorna Magara, the Chairperson of Makerere University Council, called the day a very exciting one.
“It is a day of new beginnings. We are gathered here to celebrate two special occasions. On the one hand, we have a new Chancellor about to be installed; on the other, we celebrate the restoration of the iconic Ivory Tower, the Makerere University Main Administration Building,” she noted.
“Congratulations, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, on your appointment as Chancellor of Makerere University. We eagerly anticipate benefiting from your vast experience and extensive networks to advance the university’s cause. Once again, welcome to the University service.”
She expressed gratitude to the outgoing Chancellor, Professor Ezra Suruma, for his exemplary service.

She added: “On behalf of the University Council, I extend our deepest gratitude to the Government of Uganda, led by Your Excellency and the First Lady, for your unwavering support. We thank Your Excellency and Mama Janet Museveni for ensuring timely and total funding for this project. The restoration of the main building strongly symbolises the Government’s commitment to investing in Makerere University. We recognise that these investments are crucial for transforming our society.”
