The Minister for Security Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde has urged NRM supporters in Rukungiri to elect party enthusiasts in next month’s Local Council (LC1) elections. The Minister said that voting NRM candidates will galvanize the party and consolidate the Museveni government in power.

Gen Tumukunde made the appeal on Friday while meeting with sub-county NRM executives, councilors and opinion leaders at Kebisoni sub-county in Rukungiri district.

He noted that the LC 1 elections were very vital for the strength of the ruling party and said that NRM supporters had a duty to ensure that these seats are won by strong party enthusiasts so as to continue with zeal for the party to remain in power. LC1 Chairpersons are the lowest political leaders in the government hiearachy and their major role is mobilization and security in their villages.

Tumukunde who talked at length asked the leaders to desisit from subjecting each other to political witch hunt which he said will only breed intrigue and weaken the party. This gives the opposition an opportunity to take over more LC seats which works against the ruling government, he said.

On the issue of the Age limit, Gen Tumukunde clarified that its already an issue that will be determined by Members of Parliament and that majority decision should be respected by Ugandans.

He said that there is no need to shed blood over the Age Limit debate, because the issue is being handled by a competent institution (Parliament). Tumukunde spoke against inciting the masses over the matter to the extent of shedding blood.

Gen Tumukunde asked the leaders to guide the people on matters of agricultural production so that incidents of famine that ravaged the country recently are not repeated.

He said that at an opportune time, he will traverse the entire country educating the people on issues of economic survival and food security other than engaging in issues of politicking.
