COVID-19: Chinese Billionaire, Jack Ma Donates Protective Gear, Testing Kits to All African Countries

Jack Ma, founder and Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group.

Chinese billionaire, Jack Ma who is founder of Alibaba has donated face masks and test kits to each of the African countries to aid in slowing the COVID-19 which is so far confirmed in over 20 African countries.

Jack Ma through his Jack Ma Foundation said that  the relative scarcity of medical resources in Africa, once spread, can have unimaginable consequences.

“African countries can absorb the experiences and lessons of various countries, speed up preparations, and prevent problems before they occur,” the Foundation said in a statement.

The virus has now been confirmed in at least 30 of Africa’s 54 countries.

Each of the African countries will receive 100,000 masks, 1,000 pieces of protective clothing and 1,000 protective masks.

The Foundation has also pledged 20,000 test kits as well as to cooperate with medical institutions in Africa to provide online training materials for clinical treatment of New Coronavirus.

All 6 million masks, 1.1 million test kits, 60,000 protective suits, 60,000 protective masks and other materials will be sent to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, the statement added.

Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed will provide these African anti-epidemic materials and provide logistics and distribution.

“This disaster is more difficult and longer than expected, and we must do our best to prepare for it. The past two months have told us that if we take it seriously, we can fully control the spread of the epidemic,” said the Foundation.

“Today we all live in the same forest that is on fire. Wait-and-see, panic, ignorance, inaction, and disorder are all irresponsible. We must act!”

This comes days after Jack Ma sent the first shipment of surgical masks and coronavirus test kits that his Foundation donated to the U.S.

The Chinese billionaire tweeted two pictures of the pallets of goods being loaded on to a plane in Shanghai.

Earlier this month he said he would give 500,000 testing kits and one million masks to America.

He is also sending consignments of medical supplies to Europe as he called for international cooperation efforts to combat the pandemic.
