Ukrainian comedian, Volodymyr Zelensky has won presidential elections by over 70 percent of the vote, the exit polls indicated.
He is famous for playing the role of President Petro Poroshenko on TV in a sitcom. The current president has conceded defeat and congratulated the comedian.
“We did it together,” he told reporters and a crowd that gathered at his campaign headquarters after the announcement on Sunday.
He also had his wife, parents and campaign team to thank.
“Thanks to all the Ukrainian citizens who voted for me, and to all who didn’t. I promise I won’t mess up,” Zelensky said.
According to exit polls, Zelensky defeated the incumbent Petro Poroshenko overwhelmingly. The polls indicated he got 73 percent of the vote. Poroshenko conceded the race not long after polls closed.
