Catholic Church Cancels June 3, Uganda Martyrs’ Day Celebrations

The Uganda Episcopal Conference has announced that Martyrs’ Day celebrations will not be held on 3rd June this year as it will be difficult to observe Social Distancing.

The annual celebration marked on June 3 attracts multitudes of Christians from around marks the martyrdom of several young men by Kabaka Mwanga in 1880s.

But Bishop Antony Zziwa, the chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, in an April 29, 2020 letter to his fellow Bishops, requested that this year’s celebrations be postponed owing to the threat of coronavirus that limits public gatherings.

Bishop Jjumba of Masaka was to lead the days celebrations but says his diocese wont be able to carry on with the preparations (/File).

Besides, he added, that Masaka Catholic Diocese, which was to organize this year’s celebrations, has written to him, saying that they are unprepared to host the event.
