Brig Gen Paul Muwonge Takes Command of UPDF Mountain Division & Operation Shujaa

Fort Portal – The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Division has a new commander. Brigadier General Paul Muwonge officially assumed command from Major General James Birungi during a handover ceremony held at the Division Headquarters in Muhooti, Fort Portal.

The event was presided over by Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga, Commander Land Forces, who praised Maj Gen Birungi for his impactful leadership and operational excellence.

“Maj Gen Birungi led from the front. His hands-on approach and dedication played a crucial role in the Division’s successes during his tenure,” said Lt Gen Muhanga. He described the outgoing commander’s contributions as significant, despite his relatively short time in the role.

Turning to the incoming commander, Lt Gen Muhanga expressed confidence in Brig Gen Muwonge’s ability to carry the Division forward. “He is a diligent and capable officer. I call on all brigade commanders, principal staff, and unit leaders to give him their full support,” he said.

Maj Gen Birungi, who has been appointed Uganda’s Defence Advisor to Burundi, thanked the Commander-in-Chief and the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) for the trust they placed in him. “It has been an honour to serve. I deeply appreciate the cooperation and professionalism of the officers and men of the Mountain Division,” he remarked.

In his first address as commander, Brig Gen Muwonge pledged to lead with “honour, loyalty, integrity, and dedication.” Reaffirming the Division’s motto, We Scale the Heights, he emphasised a continued commitment to peace and counter-terrorism efforts in the region.

Brig Gen Muwonge also acknowledged the support of the Commander Land Forces, which he said had been instrumental in the Division’s operational progress. Paying tribute to his predecessor, he presented Maj Gen Birungi with a souvenir in recognition of his service.

“To the officers and men under my command, I am your technical team leader. I will ensure you are equipped and supported to carry out your duties effectively. Every role is important,” he said.

The ceremony was attended by all brigade commanders, Division Administrative Officers, commanding officers, and principal staff of the Mountain Division.
