Ahead of their legends of Sound Blu3 Reunion Concert, the Blu3 trio, Jackie Chandiru, Lilian Mbabazi, and Cindy Sanyu with Reach a Hand Uganda (RAHU) held a community outreach in the informal settlements of Kitalanga, Heritage Zone in Kansanga area targeting more than 300 expecting mothers and young girls in the community through door-to-door activations and public engagement.
The outreach was aimed at empowering the young girls and women in the community on their Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) by sharing information on, menstrual health management, HIV AIDs among others.
The outreach involved the distribution of Mama Kits to expectant mothers, re-usable sanitary pads to young women and HIV testing services, condoms and PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) medicine.
The community outreach is an initiative of the Generation Gender (GenG) project which is an advocacy project and a consortium of Reach a Hand Uganda, Centre for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD), and Uganda Association of Women Lawyers (FIDA Uganda), that are promoting gender justice and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention by creating an environment for young people to address issues surrounding GBV in their communities.
While speaking during the community engagement, Allan Anyanzire, the Programs Officer Community Engagement for RAHU said that it was important to raise awareness on HIV testing so the members of the community can know their stratus.
“We want to see healthy communities and going door-to-door helps us reach the young people and teach them how to use different SRHR services such as family planning which is done through demonstrations on proper use of a condom,” Allan reiterated.
Alice Avuru, a community member and beneficiary of the outreach expressed her gratitude to RAHU and its partners for the much-needed support in helping them access SRHR services that they normally cannot afford due to poverty.
The LC1 Chairperson for Kitalanga, Heritage Zone, Christine Mbajja appreciated the work being done in her community to enhance access to SRHR services.
She said her community is affected by a high prevalence of teenage pregnancies, poor menstrual health management and HIV as women often sell their bodies for sex to take care of their basic needs.
