The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Headquarters has become a hive of political activity, draped in party yellow, as hundreds of aspirants flocked in with their supporters to beat today’s nomination deadline for positions on the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) and National Special Organs.
The nomination exercise will climax on Saturday, July 5, with the anticipated formal nomination of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as the NRM Presidential Flagbearer and National Party Chairman, sealing his bid to extend leadership into the 2026 General Elections.

Among the headline contests is the race for Second National Vice Chairperson (Female), where Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has officially joined the race.
She will square off with Rebecca Kadaga, Uganda’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Affairs, who is seeking re-election to the influential position.

Businessman Mulenga Eyes Entrepreneurs’ League
Also entering the ring is Augustus Ceasor Mulenga, a businessman and self-styled advocate for grassroots economic empowerment, who is vying for the Chairperson of the NRM Entrepreneurs League.
Mulenga criticised the current leadership for “sleeping on the job,” pledging to bridge gaps between local councils and Parliament, address burdensome taxation, and establish six regional SACCOs to boost entrepreneurship.

Mukula Stresses Continuity
In a parallel development, Mike Mukula, the NRM Vice Chairperson for the Eastern Region, has been nominated for the same Entrepreneurs League post. Mukula emphasised the importance of continuity, saying the party must consolidate its achievements under President Museveni.

He described the opposition as fragmented while portraying NRM as a cohesive force guided by loyalty and strong leadership.

Ruhunda Disqualified from Presidential Race
Meanwhile, a surprise twist emerged when Daudi Ruhunda Maguru, an aspirant who picked forms to contest for the NRM presidential flag bearer slot, was disqualified.
According to NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi, Ruhunda submitted unverified academic credentials and failed to gather the minimum of 100 endorsements from NRM delegates in each district as required.

“So far, only President Museveni has fulfilled all the requirements,” Dr. Odoi said, reiterating that nominations officially close today, July 4, 2025.
Final Day Buzz
As the nomination window closes, the political momentum within the ruling party continues to build, setting the stage for internal elections that will shape the NRM’s top leadership ahead of the 2026 national polls.

Saturday’s events, culminating in Museveni’s nomination, are expected to attract national attention and cement the tone for what promises to be an intense electoral season.
