Aloikin Praise Opoloje, a bold and unwavering voice for civil liberties and social justice in Uganda, has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2025 European Union Human Rights Defenders Award.

The award was formally presented during a ceremony held at the Embassy of Sweden in Kampala, attended by human rights advocates, diplomats, and civil society leaders.

Aloikin, a prominent figure in the 2024 anti-corruption March to Parliament protests, was recognised for her tireless work championing civil liberties, promoting government accountability, advancing feminist and social justice causes, and speaking out fearlessly against corruption.

Her activism, rooted in grassroots organising and community empowerment, has made her a symbol of resilience and defiance in the face of systemic injustice.

“This moment is not just a celebration of Aloikin—it’s a reminder of the strength and resilience of all who dare to speak truth to power,” the European Union in Uganda said in a statement shared on social media.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jan Sadek, Head of the European Union Delegation to Uganda, praised Opoloje’s “unyielding commitment to the defence and promotion of human rights,” describing her as “a beacon of courage in the struggle for freedom and dignity.”

Other honorees at the event included UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya, who received a certificate of appreciation for her leadership in human rights protection, and Hussein Kato Muyinda, Director of Earth and Rights Initiative Uganda, who was also recognised among Uganda’s distinguished human rights defenders.

Civil society leaders and fellow activists applauded Aloikin’s recognition. “Congratulations to the bravest, most resilient young woman I know,” tweeted journalist and rights advocate Agather Atuhaire.

In her acceptance speech, Aloikin emphasised the collective nature of her work: “This award belongs to every Ugandan who continues to speak up, to organise, and to push for a more just and equitable society. We will not be silenced.”

The European Union Human Rights Defenders Award, now in its annual 14th edition, honours individuals or organisations in Uganda that have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the defence of human rights under challenging circumstances.
