Airtel Uganda, in collaboration with MOGO Uganda and Transsion Holdings, has launched a transformative smartphone financing initiative designed to make quality smartphones more accessible and affordable for Ugandans nationwide.
The partnership aims to bridge the persistent “device divide”—an economic barrier that excludes millions from fully participating in Uganda’s digital economy. Under the new scheme, customers will now be able to own brand-new smartphones from leading brands, including Tecno, Infinix, and Itel, through flexible financing plans.
Through the programme, customers can walk into any MOGO Uganda outlet or select Airtel Service Centres with just a National ID. After making a small initial deposit, they can walk away with a new smartphone within minutes. Additionally, each customer will receive 3GB of free Airtel data every month for three months, enabling them to start benefiting from digital services right away.
Speaking at the launch, Mr Som Soumendra, Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, said the initiative reflects the company’s continued commitment to digital inclusion.

“In today’s digital world, a smartphone is a lifeline to opportunity. Through this partnership, we are making digital empowerment tangible and achievable for more Ugandans than ever before,” he said. “As the number one network of choice, Airtel Uganda is committed to pairing affordable devices with strong, safe, and reliable connectivity.”
Soumendra also noted that this initiative aligns with Airtel Uganda’s recent efforts to expand its network and enhance digital safety. The company recently rolled out new network sites across the country and introduced Uganda’s first AI-powered Spam Alert Service—a tool that proactively protects users from scams and digital fraud.
Mr Modestas Sudnius, CEO of Eleving Group (MOGO’s parent company), echoed this sentiment, pointing to the broader impact of smart financing on Africa’s digital growth.

“We’ve invested €30 million in Uganda, and with the launch of smartphone loans, we aim to double our business and expand into new markets. A smartphone is more than just a device—it’s a gateway to information, opportunity, and growth,” he said.
The programme is expected to empower over 360,000 Ugandans annually, from students accessing online education to farmers monitoring market prices and small business owners using mobile platforms to run their ventures.
This initiative underscores the power of innovation and collaboration in accelerating Uganda’s digital transformation—one smartphone at a time.
