Former Police spokesperson, AIGP Asan Kasingye has tested positive for COVID-19.
Kasingye who currently serves as the Police Chief Political Commissar revealed the development in a tweet on Sunday afternoon.
“BAD NEWS!! I AM COVID19 POSITIVE,” reads Kasingye’s tweet.
Without delving into other details, when contacted by this news website, Kasingye said he was waiting to be taken for treatment.
“I am at home, I am waiting for medical workers to come and take me for treatment,” Kasingye told SoftPower News.
He becomes the first Uganda government official to publicly announce his COVID-19 status.
It is not yet clear whether Kasingye is part of the latest 97 new COVID-19 cases confirmed by the Ministry of Health on Sunday from tests done on Saturday.
The new cases include 90 Contacts and Alerts from Kampala, Wakiso, Buikwe, Luweero, Namisindwa, Mukono, Jinja, Kabale, Amuru, Oyam and Tororo.
They also include a returnee from Mali and 6 truck drivers from Malaba, Busia, Mpondwe and Padea points of entry.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Health confirmed 318 new cases, the highest number of infections recorded in a day in Uganda.
The cumulative total confirmed cases of Ugandan is now 2,263. The country has registered 1,226 recoveries and 20 fatalities.
